Back at home, heâs proud he resisted the drink. Maybe he will manage the evening with Lisa just fine. He shaves and showers. His clothes, though worn, are freshly laundered. Heâs grateful not to have to worry about dressing up for the symphony. At seven he sets out for Lisaâs.
âCome in,â she says. âTake those boots off, please. Theyâre wet and theyâll muddy the floor.â
He unlaces his shoes, pleased heâs wearing fresh socks without holes. Sheâs in the kitchen stirring a pot on the stove, and it smells like onions. She wears an apron over her black figure-hugging dress. âMake yourself at home,â she says. âWould you like a soft drink or something else?
âCoffee would be fine,â he says, noticing a pot on the counter. He sits down at the kitchen table.
âIâm making coq au vin. Hope you like it.â
âEr, Iâm sure I will,â he says. Heâs never heard of it.
âTakes a long time to make, but itâs worth the effort. I took a course in French cooking last year. Youâre not a guinea pigâIâve tried this out on others before. Weâll start with French onion soup. It just needs a few minutes in the oven.â
âThatâs nice,â Barnaby says. At least heâs familiar with the soup.
âIâm finishing the dessert now. Chocolate mousse. Itâll be cold by the time weâre ready to eat it.
âGreat. I love chocolate.â
Lisa hands him a mug. âHereâs your coffee. The soup needs a few more minutes before itâs ready. Come over here and sit by the fire.â
He moves to the couch, and she sits next to him. Barnaby shifts a few inches away from her. He has no idea what heâs in for, with the unfamiliar food, and heâll have to make the best of it. She stares at the fire with an amused expression on her face. Heâs unsure what she finds funny.
âToo bad about the concert,â he says.
âOh, thatâs okay. It would have been nice, but thereâs not much time to talk when youâre listening to music. This way weâll have a chance to get to know each other better.â
He hesitates. âUh, I wanted to take you to the concert to thank you for figuring out who took my painting.â
âYouâre welcome. Quite a coincidence that the case I worked on took me to the family who used to employ Alma. Julia thought so, too.â
âYou mean Julia was involved in the case, as well?â
Lisa blushed. âUm, only a little,â she stammers.
âDo you two work together often?â he asks.
âNo, not usually. Iâve had a heavy workload lately, and I asked her to help out.â
âSo she met Alma?â
âWe both met Alma. She loves the painting. It was good of you to let her keep it.â
âHow did you find out that she had it?â
Lisa avoids his eyes. âUh, I donât remember exactly. It came up when we visited her.â
âThat is a coincidence, then. Strange.â
âOh well, thatâs how it is sometimes in my business. Strange things happen. I think the soup is ready now. Would you be good enough to light the candles on the dining room table?â
She hands him a box of matches.
